How Many Runners Are in the Boston Marathon?

The Boston Marathon fields approximately 30,000 runners, the smallest field of any Abbott World Marathon Major. Unlike the other seven, that field is not built around a general public lottery. Boston is qualifier-only, and entry is earned with a certified marathon time before it is ever ranked against a cutoff.

How is the Boston Marathon field split?

Most of Boston's 30,000 places go to runners who beat their age-group qualifying standard, 2:55 for men 18 to 34 and 3:25 for women 18 to 34 in the 2027 cycle, with looser standards for older age groups. Meeting the standard only earns a ranked application, not a bib: the BAA accepts the fastest qualifiers first until the field is full, and the slowest accepted time becomes that year's cutoff. The registration fee itself is $260, charged only on acceptance. The rest of the field comes through the BAA's John Hancock charity program, the highest fundraising bar of any Major at $7,500 to $15,000 or more per team, official tour-operator packages, and a new Boston Qualifier Selection lottery for about 1,000 spots reserved for runners who beat their standard but still missed the cutoff.

Has the Boston Marathon field grown?

The field itself has not, it has held at 30,000 for years, but the qualifier pool chasing those places keeps setting records. The 2024 race drew 33,058 qualifiers for a 5 minute 29 second cutoff, a record 36,393 applied for 2025 and a 6 minute 51 second cutoff, and 33,249 applied for 2026 even after the BAA tightened every age-group standard by five minutes to manage the demand. The 2026 cutoff still landed at 4 minutes 34 seconds under standard, and 8,887 runners with a legitimate qualifying time were turned away. What does the field size mean for your chances?

Because the field is fixed and the qualifier pool keeps growing, running the published standard is not a guarantee, it only earns a place in line. A buffer under standard is what actually decides who gets in, and that buffer moves every year depending on how many people qualify.
