How Many Runners Are in the New York City Marathon?

The TCS New York City Marathon fields approximately 55,000 runners, the largest field of any Abbott World Marathon Major and the biggest marathon on earth by finishers. Only a small slice of that field comes through the open lottery.

How is the NYC Marathon field split?

New York fills its field through several routes rather than one general ballot: the annual lottery drawing, NYRR's 9+1 program (nine qualifying NYRR races plus one volunteer shift in a calendar year earns guaranteed entry the following year), runners with 15 or more career NYC finishes, time qualifiers who clear 2:53 (men) or 3:13 (women), official charity partners with fundraising minimums from $2,500 to $10,000 depending on the team, and international tour-operator packages. NYRR does not publish an exact place-by-place breakdown of how the 55,000 spots divide across those routes, so this site does not estimate one. What is published is the lottery's own math: the 2026 drawing drew a record 240,000-plus applications for roughly 2,400 non-guaranteed places, close to a 1% acceptance rate.

Has the NYC Marathon field grown?

Not much, and that is the story. The field has held near 50,000 to 55,000 for several years while the applicant pool has not stopped climbing: NYRR reported more than 240,000 drawing applications for the 2026 race, a near 20% jump over 2025's already-record total. A field growing in the low single digits against demand growing by double digits every year is what has pushed the general drawing's odds from roughly 12% in 2022 to about 1% in 2026. What does the field size mean for your odds?

A 55,000-runner field sounds generous next to Boston's 30,000, but New York's field size tells you almost nothing about your personal odds, because the applicant pool dwarfs it more than any other Major. The ballot odds at all 8 Majors, ranked lines New York's roughly 1% up against the other seven, and only Chicago, Sydney and a handful of others clear double digits.
