NYRR 9+1 Pass: the new drawing for 2028 NYC Marathon entry

NYRR's new $99 9+1 Pass gives selected members access to the 2027 program, through which they can earn entry to the 2028 TCS New York City Marathon. The first eligibility drawing was scheduled for October 1, 2026, and applications are now closed. Runners already completing 9+1 during 2026 keep their existing path to the 2027 marathon.

What does the $99 9+1 Pass cover?

NYRR is introducing a free-to-enter eligibility drawing for its member-only 9+1 program. Selected members are notified and charged $99, including the processing fee, to become 2027 Passholders.

The pass provides access to a new race-selection process designed to help members secure qualifying race entries and complete their volunteering obligation. Members still have to complete the program requirements during 2027 to earn guaranteed entry to the 2028 marathon.

That marathon entry is non-complimentary: selection for a pass does not make the marathon free. NYRR also distinguishes the pass fee from fees for races run during the program. Budget for those separately.

Which marathon year does this affect?

The two timelines are easy to mix up:

  • Completing 9+1 during 2026: the existing route to the 2027 marathon continues unchanged.
  • Joining the 2027 program: selected Passholders complete the requirements during 2027 to earn entry to the 2028 marathon.

NYRR announced the program changes on August 6, 2026. Its announcement explicitly protects members already working toward 2027 marathon entry under the existing program.

What were the application and drawing dates?

NYRR published this timetable for the first Pass drawing:

  • Membership deadline: September 16, 2026. Applicants also needed an active membership on October 1.
  • Applications: September 17 at noon through September 29 at 11:59 p.m. ET.
  • Scheduled drawing date: October 1, 2026.

These are dates for eligibility to join 9+1. They do not describe the marathon's general entry drawing. For an individual selection notice and the next steps, follow NYRR's official 9+1 Pass guidance.
