What made 1994 notable

Chicago relaunched in 1994. A new title sponsor and the financial boost from LaSalle Bank put the freshly christened LaSalle Bank Chicago Marathon back among the world's top races, a position it had not held since 1986. Brazil's Luiz Antonio dos Santos won the men's race in 2:11:16, clear of American Ed Eyestone in 2:11:51 and Kenya's Patrick Muturi in 2:12:56. The women's race went to American Kristy Johnston in 2:31:34, ahead of Denmark's Gitte Karlshoj and American Elaine Van Blunk, before she collapsed into race director Carey Pinkowski's arms at the line. The winners each took 30,000 dollars from a 200,000 dollar purse. Over 10,000 runners competed in cool and cloudy weather under open registration, with no ballot.
