Khalid Khannouchi turned the 1997 race into a launchpad. Running his first ever marathon, the Moroccan won the 20th Chicago Marathon in 2:07:10, the fastest debut anyone had run and at the time the fourth fastest marathon in history, breaking the 12-year-old course record that Steve Jones had held since 1985. Marian Sutton of Great Britain completed a Chicago double, winning the women's race in 2:29:03 a year after her first title. Perfect weather and an unprecedented 650,000 spectators welcomed a record 16,372 registrants from all 50 states and 47 countries, with 300,000 dollars in prize money plus 197,000 dollars in time bonuses on the line.
