Context

What made 2007 notable

Heat defined Chicago in 2007. The 30th edition began at a record 73 F (22 C) and climbed to 88 F (31 C), and roughly 3.5 hours in officials halted the race, turning runners short of halfway off the course as conditions turned dangerous. At least 49 people were taken to hospitals and another 250 treated on course. Chad Schieber, a 35-year-old police officer from Midland, Michigan, collapsed and died; the medical examiner ruled the cause a mitral valve prolapse, not the heat. Of more than 36,000 starters only 24,931 finished. Patrick Ivuti won in 2:11:11, edging Jaouad Gharib by 0.05 seconds, and Berhane Adere took the women's title in 2:33:49. The disaster prompted the Event Alert System for 2008.
