Context

What made 2010 notable

The 33rd edition belonged to Sammy Wanjiru. The 2008 Olympic champion arrived hampered by injury and a stomach virus, yet on the 10.10.10 date he traded surges with Tsegaye Kebede for the final 5km before pulling away in the last 400 metres to win in 2:06:24, 19 seconds clear. It was the last marathon he ever finished: Wanjiru died on 15 May 2011. The women's result was rewritten by doping. Liliya Shobukhova first crossed in 2:20:25 and Maria Konovalova was second, but both were later sanctioned, leaving Ethiopia's Atsede Baysa the official winner in 2:23:40 ahead of American Desiree Davila. A record 38,132 runners started on a warm day.

Liliya Shobukhova first crossed the women's line in 2:20:25, but her result and that of runner-up Maria Konovalova were both annulled for doping, leaving Ethiopia's Atsede Baysa the official winner in 2:23:40 ahead of American Desiree Davila in 2:26:20.

Why was the 2010 Chicago Marathon Sammy Wanjiru's last race? +

The 2008 Olympic champion won Chicago on 10 October 2010 in 2:06:24, his final completed marathon. Wanjiru died on 15 May 2011 after a fall at his home in Nyahururu, Kenya, so the 33rd Chicago Marathon stands as his last victory.

When was the 2010 Chicago Marathon and how hot was it? +

Sunday, 10 October 2010, the 33rd running, started early at 7:30 am to limit heat injuries. The day still warmed up, with the temperature climbing into the 70s F by the finish and a reading near 80F reported at 20 miles. A record 38,132 runners started.

How did you enter the 2010 Chicago Marathon? +

Entry was first-come in 2010, not a lottery, with charity team places the other way in. Chicago did not move to a non-guaranteed entry drawing until 2014, so no drawing acceptance rate or application count exists for 2010.
