Context

What made 2019 notable

The day belonged to Brigid Kosgei. Her 2:14:04 was the first women's marathon world record set in Chicago in years, slicing 81 seconds off Paula Radcliffe's 2:15:25 from 2003 on a cool, near ideal morning around 5 degrees. It landed barely a day after Eliud Kipchoge ran 1:59:41 in Vienna, but Kosgei's came in an official, record-eligible race. The men's race was a thriller too: Lawrence Cherono outkicked Dejene Debela by a single second in 2:05:45, the closest podium in Chicago history. More than 45,000 runners finished the flat, fast loop through the city's neighbourhoods, the backdrop to a record few expected to see fall.
