Kelvin Kiptum's 2:00:35 defined the 2023 Bank of America Chicago Marathon, a men's world record that lowered Eliud Kipchoge's mark by 34 seconds and stood as the closest any record-eligible race had come to sub-two. The 23-year-old's run came months before his death in a road accident in February 2024, and the race is remembered as one of his finest. Sifan Hassan added a women's course record of 2:13:44 on the same near-perfect morning, cool and partly cloudy near 8 C. Around the elites, 48,472 runners finished, the biggest field in race history at the time, and Chicago crowned its millionth finisher.
