The defining story of the 2011 London Marathon was Emmanuel Mutai's course record. The Kenyan burst clear after 20 miles and ran 2:04:40, half a minute inside Sammy Wanjiru's 2009 mark and the fourth fastest marathon run at the time, with Martin Lel and Patrick Makau both home in 2:05:45. Mary Keitany announced herself over the distance in 2:19:19, a London time only Paula Radcliffe had bettered, ahead of Liliya Shobukhova in 2:20:15. David Weir won the men's wheelchair race in 1:30:05 and Amanda McGrory took the women's in a course record 1:46:31. Conditions were near perfect, about 10 degrees under light cloud with little wind, and the ballot for the 31st edition drew 163,926 applications.
