Context

What made 2013 notable

The 2013 London Marathon was defined by its response to the Boston Marathon bombings six days earlier. A 30-second silence preceded the men's start, many runners pinned on black ribbons, and organisers pledged two pounds for every finisher to The One Fund Boston, with a banner reading run if you can, walk if you must, but finish for Boston. The racing was run under cloudless skies in virtually still conditions. Tsegaye Kebede of Ethiopia came from nearly a minute down at 35km to overhaul Emmanuel Mutai in the final quarter mile, winning in 2:06:04. Priscah Jeptoo led a Kenyan one two in 2:20:15. Tatyana McFadden set a women's wheelchair course record of 1:46:02. The ballot drew 167,449 applications.
