Overview

How charity places work

The TCS London Marathon's charity programme is the largest of any marathon on earth, with more than 1,000 partner charities offering bonded and ballot places each year. Bonded places run under the Charity Bond Scheme, split into Golden Bonds (four guaranteed entries per year for a four-year term) and Silver Bonds (two entries per year for a four-year term). The scheme was relaunched in 2024 to widen access beyond the long-standing partners and to bring 800 new charities into the system from the 2026 race onwards. Application windows for individual charity places typically open between October and January, often within 48 hours of the public ballot results announcement. Minimum fundraising targets range from no minimum at all up to £3,000 or more, with most well-known causes sitting between £2,200 and £2,800.
