What made 1982 notable

New York 1982 produced one of the closest finishes in the race's history. Alberto Salazar, the two-time defending champion, and Rodolfo Gomez of Mexico battled the length of the course and arrived together at Central Park, where vehicles and motorcycles crossing a bare lawn kicked up a cloud of dust the leaders had to run through. Salazar emerged from it just ahead, winning in 2:09:29 to Gomez's 2:09:33, a four-second margin and his third straight New York title. Dan Schlesinger took third in 2:11:54. Grete Waitz of Norway won the women's race in 2:27:14 for her fourth New York victory, beating Julie Brown and Charlotte Teske.
