The Tanzanian, a perennial Boston runner-up, surged clear in the final miles to win in 2:08:01, a course record that cut 12 seconds off Alberto Salazar's 1981 best and would stand for 12 years until 2001. Ken Martin of the United States chased him home in 2:09:38, with Gelindo Bordin of Italy a stride back in 2:09:40. The women's race went to Ingrid Kristiansen of Norway, who led from gun to tape in 2:25:30, missing Allison Roe's course record by a single second, eight years after she had finished second here in 1981.
