What made 1996 notable

New York 1996 closed an era. Giacomo Leone of Italy, a part-time police officer, won in 2:09:54, the first Italian to take the title since Gianni Poli in 1986 and the last European man to win before a long line of African champions took over the race. He had skipped Venice for the tougher New York field and trusted his training. The women's race turned on a collapse: two-time defending champion Tegla Loroupe ran early on course-record pace, then faded badly and finished seventh before being carried to the medical tent with dizziness. Anuta Catuna of Romania pressed home in 2:28:18, ahead of Franca Fiacconi and Joyce Chepchumba. A total of 28,182 runners finished.
