What made 2002 notable

This was Kenya's afternoon. Rodgers Rop, the Boston champion that spring, won in cold wind by 10 seconds over Christopher Cheboiboch, with Laban Kipkemboi a step back, the first all-Kenyan men's 1-2-3 in marathon history. Joyce Chepchumba took the women's race in 2:25:56, and the twin victories made 2002 the first marathon where Kenyans won both titles. The bronze medal carried a sting: Olivera Jevtic crossed third but was later disqualified for ephedrine, lifting Esther Kiplagat onto the podium. The wind held the times down, yet the story was the sweep. A total of 31,824 runners finished. NYRR did not publish a drawing count for 2002.
