What made 2004 notable

Paula Radcliffe made New York her redemption. Ten weeks after stepping off the course at the Athens Olympics, the world record holder ran shoulder to shoulder with Susan Chepkemei for the final 10 kilometres before pulling clear in the last 200 metres to win in 2:23:10, just three seconds ahead, the closest women's finish in the race's history. The men's race went to Hendrick Ramaala of South Africa in 2:09:28, his decisive surge at mile 23 carrying him clear of Athens silver medallist Meb Keflezighi, second in 2:09:53. A total of 36,513 runners finished, 24,563 men and 11,950 women. NYRR did not publish a drawing selection count for 2004, so ballot figures are not listed here.
