Context

What made 2021 notable

After 2020 was wiped out, the milestone 50th running finally happened on November 7, 2021 at reduced capacity. NYRR capped the field near 30,000, down roughly 40 percent from a normal year, with distancing built into the start and finish, and 25,020 runners crossed the line. Conditions were close to ideal: sunny, cool, with light wind, about 7 degrees at the Verrazzano start and 11 by Central Park. Albert Korir of Kenya took the men's title in 2:08:22. Olympic champion Peres Jepchirchir won the women's race in 2:22:39, becoming the first woman to win an Olympic marathon gold and a fall Major in the same year. Because entry relied heavily on deferred 2020 places and time qualifiers, no standard lottery application figure was published.
