What runners faced on the course
What made 2025 notable
NYRR broke its own record: more than 200,000 lottery applications for the 2025 race, a 22 percent jump over the prior year. Drawing day was March 5 and acceptance ran roughly two to three percent from the general pool. Race morning delivered a 12 degree, clear, calm forecast that runners called the cleanest setup in years, and 59,226 of them crossed in Central Park, a new world record for largest marathon in history. Benson Kipruto won the men's race in 2:08:09, Hellen Obiri set a course record of 2:19:51 in the women's. Demand is now growing faster than capacity. Charity entry is the realistic backup.
