What made 2021 notable

The 2021 Tokyo Marathon finally happened on March 6, 2022 after the pandemic forced two postponements from March 2021, then October 2021. It stays the 2021 edition: there was no calendar 2021 race and no 2022 edition. A reduced field of 19,057 entrants started under tight COVID protocols, the first mass running of Tokyo since 2019, and 18,272 finished. Cool, sunny conditions near 8 degrees produced history at the front. Eliud Kipchoge won his Tokyo debut in 2:02:40, a course record and the fourth-fastest marathon ever at the time. Brigid Kosgei matched him with 2:16:02, also a course record, giving the race the fastest combined men's and women's winning times then run anywhere.
