Boston Marathon 2027 Registration Opens September 14
Boston Marathon 2027 qualifier registration opens Monday, September 14, 2026 and closes at 5:00 p.m. ET on Friday, September 18. Applications go through the Boston Athletic Association's Athletes' Village platform. The process is not first-come, first-served, so registering on Monday offers no advantage over a valid application submitted later in the five-day window.
Who can register for the 2027 Boston Marathon?
Runners can apply if they recorded a valid Boston qualifying time for their age and gender during the current qualifying window, which began September 13, 2025. The B.A.A. uses each runner's age on race day, April 19, 2027, and evaluates the official net time from a certified marathon.
Meeting the published standard allows a runner to apply, but it does not guarantee entry. If applications exceed the places available to qualifiers, the B.A.A. ranks runners by how far they finished under their respective standard. The Boston Marathon page lists every 2027 qualifying standard, while the qualification checker compares a result with the correct age group.
Do you need to apply as soon as registration opens?
No. All applications submitted before the deadline are evaluated together. Speed on the course matters, but speed on the registration website does not.
Applicants should still avoid leaving the process until Friday. A qualifying result must be reviewed, and the application must be completed in Athletes' Village before the 5:00 p.m. ET deadline. The B.A.A.'s optional July pre-verification period has already ended, but pre-verification was never the application itself.
What changed for Boston registration in 2027?
The largest technical change affects qualifying times from steep net-downhill courses. The B.A.A. adds five minutes to results from courses dropping 1,500 to 2,999 feet and 10 minutes to results from courses dropping 3,000 to 5,999 feet. Courses with a net drop of 6,000 feet or more are not accepted for Boston qualification.
There is also a new second chance after the normal cutoff is set. Qualifiers who met their standard but missed the final cutoff will automatically enter the Boston Qualifier Selection, a random draw for approximately 1,000 additional places. There is no separate lottery application. The Boston Marathon 2027 lottery explainer covers that process in detail.
When will Boston Marathon 2027 applicants hear back?
The B.A.A. expects to notify all qualifier applicants of acceptance or non-acceptance in early October 2026. A temporary credit-card preauthorization may appear after applying, but it does not mean the runner has been accepted. Only accepted athletes are charged the race entry fee.
