Tokyo Marathon 2027 Grows to a Record 40,000

The Tokyo Marathon 2027 will field 40,000 runners, up from 39,000, the largest field in the race's history. The 20th anniversary edition runs on Sunday, March 7, 2027, starting at 9:10 a.m. from the Tokyo Metropolitan Government Building in Shinjuku and finishing on Gyoko-dori by Tokyo Station.

How big is the Tokyo Marathon field?

Forty thousand places for 2027, a 2.6% increase on the previous cap. For context, the first mass-participation Tokyo Marathon in 2007 produced 25,102 finishers, and the 2026 edition started a preliminary 38,773 runners. Tokyo has grown its field in every recent edition without loosening the lottery, which is why the published acceptance rate has stayed near 10% rather than improving. The full field-size history sits on the Tokyo Marathon page.

What happened to the 10.7km race?

It has been replaced. The Foundation is retiring the 10.7km para race and introducing a full-distance para-athlete marathon division over the complete 42.195km course, for eligible classes including T11 and T12 visually impaired athletes and T53 and T54 wheelchair athletes. This is a genuine upgrade rather than a rebrand: para athletes who previously raced a quarter of the distance now race the same course as everyone else.

What is the Duo Team division?

A category for two-person teams made up of one buggy rider and one pusher. It ran as a trial in earlier editions and becomes an official division for 2027, entered through the General Entry category alongside standard runners, wheelchair participants and runners with disabilities.

What are the race-day timings?

The marathon starts at 9:10 a.m. and the wheelchair marathon at 9:05 a.m. The course limit is 7 hours from the gun, with a 4:10 p.m. finish cutoff, while entrants must be capable of completing the distance within 6 hours 30 minutes to be eligible in the first place. The course carries JAAF, AIMS and World Athletics certification.

When can I apply for the expo?

Expo applications open at 2:00 p.m. JST on September 1, 2026, which is after the semi-elite and member entry results and before general lottery results on September 18. Bib collection happens at the expo, and Tokyo does not post bibs.

How do I get one of the 40,000 places?

The General Entry lottery opens August 14 and closes August 28, 2026. The semi-elite and ONE TOKYO GLOBAL routes run July 31 to August 13, and the charity window for this edition closed on July 9. Each route is broken down in how to enter the Tokyo Marathon.

Free alerts cover the Tokyo ballot window at both ends, so the biggest field Tokyo has ever offered does not close unnoticed.
