Tokyo Marathon Entry Fee 2027: What It Costs

The Tokyo Marathon 2027 entry fee is USD 230 for runners living outside Japan and JPY 19,800 for runners based in Japan. Both figures include entry, handling and tax. Nothing is charged when you apply. The fee only becomes payable if the lottery selects you, in a window that runs September 18 to 30, 2026.

Do you pay when you enter the Tokyo Marathon lottery?

No. General Entry applications carry no upfront charge. Selected runners pay during the payment window that opens at 11:00 a.m. JST on September 18, 2026 and closes at 5:00 p.m. JST on September 30, 2026. Missing that window forfeits the place, and the money never leaves an unsuccessful applicant's account at all.

What else does Tokyo charge on top of the entry fee?

Baggage check costs an additional JPY 1,200 and is optional. Runners who skip it need a plan for warm clothing at a start line that is often near freezing. The Green Mileage Program, the race's carbon offset scheme, invites an additional USD 26 donation and is voluntary.

Why is the overseas fee quoted in dollars?

The Tokyo Marathon Foundation prices the overseas category in USD rather than converting the domestic yen fee, so exchange-rate movement between application and payment does not change what an international runner owes. At USD 230, the overseas fee sits meaningfully above the JPY 19,800 domestic rate.

What is the real cost of running Tokyo?

The entry fee is the small part. Flights to Japan, five or six nights of accommodation in a race-week market, and the bib pickup trip to the Tokyo Big Sight expo all land on top. Runners chasing the Six Star medal usually budget Tokyo as one of the two most expensive Majors alongside Sydney. The Majors cost calculator builds a per-race estimate, and the Tokyo Marathon page carries the entry, travel and race-week detail in one place.

Is charity entry cheaper?

No, it is considerably more expensive. Tokyo's RUN with HEART charity route requires a donation to a partner organization on top of the entry fee, with minimums starting at JPY 100,000 and running to JPY 350,000 depending on the charity. Full partner-by-partner minimums are on the Tokyo charity page.

Who is eligible to pay in the first place?

Applicants must be 19 or older on race day, March 7, 2027, and able to finish inside 6 hours 30 minutes. The wheelchair marathon standard is 2 hours 30 minutes.

Free alerts flag the Tokyo ballot window before it opens and again before it closes, which is the part that costs nothing at all.
