Tokyo Marathon Qualifying Times: 2:22 and 2:50

The Tokyo Marathon Semi-Elite (Overseas) standard for 2027 is under 2 hours 22 minutes 00 seconds for men and under 2 hours 50 minutes 00 seconds for women. Times must be gun times from a World Athletics Label Road Race run between July 2024 and June 2026. The overseas category holds 25 places for men and 25 for women. Entry runs July 31 to August 13, 2026.

What are the Tokyo Marathon qualifying times?

Under 2:22:00 for men, under 2:50:00 for women, for runners living outside Japan. The time must be a gun time, not a chip time, and it must come with an official finisher's certificate. Only World Athletics Label Road Races count, which rules out most local marathons no matter how accurate the course.

Does hitting the standard guarantee a place?

No. This is the part that catches people out. If applications exceed the 25 places available per gender, the Tokyo Marathon Foundation accepts the fastest applicants in the pool. The published standard is an entry ticket to the queue, not a place in the race. In practice the effective cutoff usually lands several minutes faster than the standard itself.

What happens if the semi-elite application fails?

Rejected semi-elite applicants are automatically transferred into General Entry for the regular lottery draw. Applying through RUN as ONE therefore costs nothing in terms of lottery odds, which makes it worth attempting for anyone close to the standard. How big is the whole semi-elite field?

The full RUN as ONE semi-elite category is capped at 280 runners across domestic and overseas entrants, out of a 40,000-runner race. The Foundation states plainly that the qualifying time is set so that the number of entries lands near the field size, meaning the standard itself can move year to year.

When do semi-elite results come out?

September 1, 2026, with a payment window from September 1 to September 11, 2026. That is more than two weeks ahead of the September 18 general lottery notification, so a fast runner knows their answer first.

How does this compare with other Majors?

Tokyo's qualifying door is far narrower than Boston's, which is a genuine mass-participation qualifying route, and closer in spirit to a championship entry.
