What runners faced on the course
What made 2000 notable
Berlin 2000 produced one of the great pacemaker stories in marathon history. Simon Biwott of Eldoret, Kenya, was hired to set the early pace and drop out at 28k. Instead he kept going, realised a favourite had pulled out, and won outright in 2:07:42, the fifth fastest time in the world that year. Antonio Pena of Spain took second just five seconds back. In the women's race Kazumi Matsuo became the first Japanese winner of the Berlin Marathon in 2:26:15. Conditions were nearly perfect: dry, no wind, cloudy at the start and brightening later. A record field of 27,017 runners entered the marathon, with 34,090 athletes registered overall.
