What runners faced on the course
What made 2001 notable
The 2001 Berlin Marathon belongs to one runner. Naoko Takahashi crossed the line in 2:19:46, the first woman ever under 2 hours 20 minutes, breaking the barrier that Tegla Loroupe and Ingrid Kristiansen had chased for years. Loroupe, the previous record holder, finished second in 2:28:03, more than eight minutes back. Conditions on the flat course were close to ideal: about 15 C at the start, light rain, only a slight wind. Joseph Ngolepus of Kenya took the men's title in 2:08:47. The record lasted barely a week before Catherine Ndereba went faster in Chicago, but Berlin had already cemented its reputation as the place fast marathons happen.
