What made 2012 notable

The defining story of 2012 was the closest finish Berlin had ever seen. Geoffrey Mutai and his training partner Dennis Kimetto ran shoulder to shoulder into the Brandenburg Gate, with Mutai edging clear by a single second, 2:04:15 to 2:04:16. Kimetto's time was the fastest marathon debut ever run. The one-second margin clinched Mutai the 2011 to 2012 World Marathon Majors series title and its half-million-dollar bonus. Conditions were near ideal: bright sunshine over a 10 C start that rose to only 14 C, with barely any wind. Aberu Kebede took the women's race in 2:20:30. Berlin again confirmed its billing as the fastest of the Majors.
