What runners faced on the course
What made 2013 notable
Berlin 2013 belonged to Wilson Kipsang. In near-perfect cool conditions, starting at 8 C and rising to 13, he ran 2:03:23 to clip 15 seconds off Patrick Makau's world record from the same flat Berlin course in 2011. It was athletics' first world record of 2013. Behind him, a young Eliud Kipchoge finished second in 2:04:05 in only his second marathon, the only marathon defeat he would suffer across the next six years. Florence Kiplagat took the women's title in 2:21:13. Berlin again proved why it is the world's fastest Major, the place runners come to chase a personal best on dead-flat tarmac.
