What made 2022 notable

Eliud Kipchoge turned Berlin into history again. Going through halfway in 59:51, the Kenyan ran 2:01:09 to break his own 2018 world record by 30 seconds, reaffirming Berlin as the fastest course on earth. Cool, mostly cloudy conditions near 12 degrees with barely a breath of wind were as good as marathon weather gets. The women's race produced its own shock: Tigist Assefa of Ethiopia, in only her second marathon, ran 2:15:37 to smash the course record by more than two minutes and move to third on the all-time list. A full field returned to the capital, 45,527 starters and 34,879 finishers from 157 countries, a year after the pandemic-shrunk 2021 return.
