Context

What made 2023 notable

Tigst Assefa rewrote the women's marathon. The Ethiopian ran 2:11:53 in Berlin to take more than two minutes off Brigid Kosgei's 2019 world record, the single biggest leap in the women's mark in decades and one of the great days in the event's history. Eliud Kipchoge took his own slice of history with a record fifth Berlin title in 2:02:42, the men's race the deepest ever with nine runners inside 2:05. Partly cloudy conditions near 13 degrees at the start, climbing toward 19, kept the course honest and fast. Almost 48,000 runners from 156 countries packed the capital, with the Brandenburg Gate finish once again the fastest place to run a marathon.
