What made 2000 notable

Chicago 2000 belonged to Khalid Khannouchi. Having set the world record here in 1999 as a Moroccan, he returned five months after becoming a US citizen and ran 2:07:01, an American record that erased David Morris's 2:09:32 from a year earlier and made the win his second in Chicago. Josephat Kiprono pushed him to the line in 2:07:29, with Moses Tanui third in 2:07:47. The women's race opened a new era of its own: Catherine Ndereba won in 2:21:33, the first of consecutive Chicago titles, beating Lornah Kiplagat by just over a minute. A field of 27,870 finished on the day.
