What made 2013 notable

Chicago belonged to Dennis Kimetto. On a clear, fast day the Kenyan ran 2:03:45 to win the 36th edition, erasing Tsegaye Kebede's 2:04:38 course record from a year earlier and posting what World Athletics called the fourth-fastest marathon ever and the quickest on US soil. Emmanuel Mutai chased him home in a 2:03:52 personal best, with Sammy Kitwara third in 2:05:16. Rita Jeptoo answered in the women's race, running 2:19:57 for the only sub-2:20 in the world that year, clear of Jemima Sumgong and Maria Konovalova. Some 39,122 runners finished. Entry was still first-come in 2013: general registration opened on 19 February, a year after the 2012 race sold out in six days.
