Context

What made 2014 notable

Eliud Kipchoge announced himself in Chicago. On his debut over the course he won the 37th edition in 2:04:11, holding off fellow Kenyans Sammy Kitwara and Dickson Chumba for an all-Kenyan men's podium. The women's result is more complicated: Rita Jeptoo finished first in 2:24:35, but the Court of Arbitration for Sport annulled her 2014 results in October 2016 over an EPO violation, promoting Ethiopia's Mare Dibaba to champion in 2:25:37. The race marked the first year of a full non-guaranteed entry drawing, with more than 71,000 people applying for a field of around 45,000. Runners started in cool, partly cloudy weather around 46F, troubled mainly by a gusting southeast wind.
