Context

What made 2017 notable

The 40th Chicago Marathon belonged to Galen Rupp. The Oregon runner surged away on Columbus Drive to win in 2:09:20, ending a 15-year wait for an American men's champion and becoming the first US-born winner since 1982. Defending champion Abel Kirui chased him home in 2:09:48. The women's race was nearly as memorable: Tirunesh Dibaba clocked 2:18:30, the second fastest time in race history, while 26-year-old Jordan Hasay took third in 2:20:57 to move to second on the all-time American list. Mild, partly cloudy conditions greeted the 44,508 finishers, who started in 57F air with high humidity and a light southwest breeze.
