What made 2016 notable

The 39th Chicago Marathon was a comeback story. Abel Kirui, the 2009 and 2011 world marathon champion, had not won a marathon since 2011 and had failed to win on American soil before. Running without pacemakers over the closing miles, he edged defending champion Dickson Chumba by three seconds in 2:11:23 to claim his first major. Florence Kiplagat was more emphatic, seizing control past 30km to defend her women's title in 2:21:32. Calm conditions and a 52F start greeted the field of more than 40,000 runners from all 50 states and over 100 countries. Entry came through a spring non-guaranteed drawing that opened on 15 March and closed on 12 April 2016.
