What made 1993 notable

The 1993 NutraSweet London Marathon delivered a result Britain has not seen since: a home winner in the men's race. Eamonn Martin, a 34-year-old track specialist running his first marathon, unleashed his trademark finish under Big Ben to win in 2:10:50, edging Isidro Rico of Mexico by three seconds in a sprint to the line, with Grzegorz Gajdus of Poland third. More than three decades on, Martin's win is still the most recent by a British man at London. Katrin Dorre-Heinig of Germany took the women's race in 2:27:09, the second of her three straight London titles, ahead of Lisa Ondieki and Liz McColgan. George Vandamme and Rose Hill set wheelchair course records, and 24,495 runners finished.
