What made 2001 notable

The 2001 Flora London Marathon, the 21st running, turned on the men's race. Morocco's Abdelkader El Mouaziz surged at Tower Bridge and again at 35km to win in 2:07:11, his second London title after 1999. The story behind him was Paul Tergat, the five-time world cross-country champion, making his marathon debut: he could only answer the moves, finishing second in 2:08:15, with defending champion Antonio Pinto of Portugal third. Ethiopia's Derartu Tulu won a close women's race in 2:23:57. In the wheelchair divisions, France's Denis Lemeunier took the men's title in 1:42:37 and Britain's Tanni Grey-Thompson won the women's in 2:13:55. 31,156 started and 30,066 finished.
