The 2002 Flora London Marathon is remembered as one of the greatest marathons ever run. Khalid Khannouchi of the United States won the men's race in 2:05:38, a world record that lowered his own Chicago 1999 best by four seconds, holding off Paul Tergat of Kenya in 2:05:48 and Haile Gebrselassie of Ethiopia in 2:06:35 after a three way battle to the line. Paula Radcliffe won the women's race in 2:18:56 on her marathon debut, a world best for a women's only race and just nine seconds off the outright world record. A record near 99,000 people applied, and 32,536 runners finished, 7,768 of them women.
