What made 2008 notable

The 2008 Flora London Marathon delivered the fastest top-end men's race ever seen at the time. Martin Lel of Kenya retained his crown in a course-record 2:05:15, breaking a six-year-old mark, with Samuel Wanjiru second in 2:05:24 and Abderrahim Goumri third in 2:05:30. It was the first time three men had finished a single race under 2:06. Run on Sunday 13 April, the day stayed mostly kind to runners, though a prolonged heavy shower swept the course. Germany's Irina Mikitenko won the women's race in 2:24:14, in only her second marathon. A total of 34,212 runners finished, 23,574 men and 10,638 women.
