Context

What made 2021 notable

After the elite-only 2020 race, the 2021 London Marathon returned the mass field for the first time since 2019, run on 3 October in its traditional Blackheath to The Mall format following a COVID-driven move out of April. Ballot results were emailed for the first time on 8 February 2021. About 40,000 runners took part in person, with roughly another 40,000 in a parallel virtual event. Race day was cool and dry, near 12 degrees at the start with a light breeze and a headwind around Canary Wharf. Sisay Lemma of Ethiopia won the men's race in 2:04:01, while Joyciline Jepkosgei of Kenya took the women's title in 2:17:43. Marcel Hug and Manuela Schar set wheelchair course records.
