Context

What made 1974 notable

New York 1974 belonged to the city itself. The race was still four laps of Central Park, the format it had used since the dollar entry inaugural of 1970, and both winners lived in New York. Norbert Sander, a local physician, won the men's race in 2:26:30 from Art McAndrews and Larry Frederick, with future four time champion Bill Rodgers fifth in 2:35:59 before his own era arrived. Kathrine Switzer, who had forced her way into Boston in 1967, won the women's race in 3:07:29 against eight other women. Sander and Switzer remain the only New York City residents to win the race. There were 259 finishers. Two years later the marathon left the park for all five boroughs.
