What made 1975 notable

Nineteen seventy-five was the last New York City Marathon run entirely inside Central Park, and its 339 finishers showed the race had outgrown the loop course it had used since the 1970 inaugural, when 55 of 127 entrants finished after paying a one dollar entry fee. Tom Fleming of the United States won the men's race in a course record 2:19:27 for his second New York title, ahead of William Bragg and Tim Smith. The edition doubled as the U.S. women's championship, won by Kim Merritt of the United States in a course record 2:46:14, with Miki Gorman second and Gayle Barron third. A year later the race spread across the five boroughs.
