What made 1976 notable

This is the year New York became New York. After six low key editions looping Central Park, race director Fred Lebow took the 1976 marathon out across all five boroughs, from the Verrazzano-Narrows Bridge to the finish. On an overcast 40F day, 2,090 entrants set off and 1,549 finished. Bill Rodgers won the men's race in a course record 2:10:10, more than three minutes clear of 1976 Olympic silver medalist Frank Shorter in 2:13:12. Miki Gorman, 41, took the women's title in 2:39:11, a course record and then the second fastest women's marathon ever run. The five-borough course launched the Rodgers and, from 1978, Grete Waitz era that made New York a global event.
