What made 1985 notable

New York 1985 belonged to Grete Waitz. The Norwegian won the women's race in 2:28:34 for her seventh New York title in eight years, topping a field of more than 3,000 women for the fourth straight year. The win tied a 55-year-old record of seven victories in a single major marathon, set by Clarence DeMar at Boston between 1911 and 1930. Lisa Martin of Australia pushed her hardest, finishing second in 2:29:48, with Laura Fogli third. The men's race went to Orlando Pizzolato of Italy in 2:11:34, his second straight New York win and a far smoother run than his heat-stricken 1984 debut, ahead of Ahmed Salah and Pat Petersen.
