What made 1986 notable

New York moved to November for the first time in 1986, and the day belonged to two repeat storylines. Gianni Poli pulled clear after 19 miles to win in 2:11:06, the third year running an Italian man had taken the five-borough title. Antoni Niemczak reached the line second in 2:11:21 but later failed a doping test for nandrolone and was disqualified, lifting Robert de Castella to second and Orlando Pizzolato to third. In the women's race Grete Waitz was untouchable again, winning in 2:28:06 for her eighth New York victory, well clear of Lisa Ondieki and Laura Fogli. New York Road Runners records show 19,508 runners finished, 16,196 men and 3,312 women.
