What made 1992 notable

New York 1992 was about a homecoming. Willie Mtolo of South Africa, racing abroad for the first time after the apartheid sports boycott ended, won the men's race in 2:09:29 to become the first South African to take the title. He stayed patient, then surged on the hill into Central Park, and Andres Espinosa of Mexico could not respond, finishing second in 2:10:53. The women's race belonged to Australia's Lisa Ondieki, who led from early on to win in 2:24:40, a course record that broke Allison Roe's 1981 mark by 49 seconds and would stand for nine years.
