What made 1993 notable

New York 1993 was a year of breakthroughs. Mexico's Andres Espinosa had finished second in the city twice, running 2:10:00 in 1991 and 2:10:44 in 1992, and this time he closed it out, winning in 2:10:04 with American Bob Kempainen second in 2:11:03 and Arturo Barrios third for a strong Mexican showing. Germany's Uta Pippig made her own history in the women's race, winning in 2:26:24 to become the first German woman to win in New York, holding off Olga Appell of Mexico despite warm conditions and a late headwind. Run on 14 November, the latest date in the race's history to that point, 26,597 runners finished.
