What made 1994 notable

New York 1994 gave the race two stories that still get retold. Kenya's Tegla Loroupe, just 21, won the women's race in 2:27:37 to become the first African woman to win a major marathon, a result that opened doors across the sport. In the men's race German Silva of Mexico turned the wrong way into Central Park with about seven-tenths of a mile left, losing roughly 12 seconds and 35 meters, then chased down compatriot Benjamin Paredes to win by 2 seconds in 2:11:21, the closest finish in race history to that point. Arturo Barrios made it a Mexican sweep of the men's podium in third. A total of 29,735 runners finished on the day.
