What made 1999 notable

Chebet finally got his day. Runner-up in New York by three seconds the year before, he kicked clear late to win in 2:09:14 and complete the Boston and New York double in a single year, the first to do it since Alberto Salazar in 1982. Domingos Castro and Shem Kororia chased him home within 18 seconds. The women's race was a solo grind: Adriana Fernandez broke from Franca Fiacconi past 14 miles and ran alone into 20 to 30 mile per hour head winds to win in 2:25:06, the second fastest women's time in race history at the time, with Catherine Ndereba and Katrin Dorre-Heinig well back. A total of 31,786 runners finished in cold, gusting wind.
