What made 2000 notable

El Mouaziz turned the men's race into a procession. He pushed clear at 8 miles, kept stretching the gap even as his last 10K slowed, and won by 2:22 in 2:10:09, the first Moroccan to take New York. Behind him Japhet Kosgei and Shem Kororia filled the Kenyan minor places. The women's race was the opposite, a duel: Lyudmila Petrova held off defending champion Franca Fiacconi by about 100 meters to win in 2:25:45, becoming the first Russian woman to win in New York, while Tegla Loroupe's comeback faded late. The 31st running was also the first with official wheelchair and handcycle divisions. A total of 29,327 runners finished in cold, gusting wind.
